Working at Shwayder
The Challenge: A Summer at Shwayder Camp
Since 1949, Shwayder Camp has provided both young and old the opportunity to learn and grow. Shwayder offers a fine balance between education and recreation. As a Jewish camp, Shwayder seeks to enhance the experience of our campers and staff with the richness of Jewish faith and culture. The Camp places a strong emphasis on personal growth and positive self-image. For all who attend, camp is an unforgettable religious, cultural, and emotional experience.
Shwayder takes a great deal of pride in its staff. The staff is comprised of college students, graduate students, and professionals in various fields. Staff members provide a stable and caring home for campers all summer long. A summer as a member of Shwayder’s staff is a wonderful social and educational experience. Come learn and bond with 100 other dedicated and talented staff members.
…at the beginning of the week, we were crying because we missed our parents. By the end of the week, we were crying because we were going to miss our counselors!” — Rebecca, 8, Kansas City
We Have a Place for You!
Each year, we look for competent and energetic young adults to fill our staff positions. Previous experience isn’t the key to success at Shwayder: you are! Training is provided at the start of the summer season, and is ongoing throughout the summer. We seek to ensure that staff members have as great a time as do our campers.
Counselors live in bunks with the campers. They have the most direct influence on their campers’ summer experiences. Counselors serve as responsible, mature and Jewish role models for their campers. The cabin group is most important. We do all we can to ensure that our campers get the most out of it. The cabin group becomes the campers’ camp family. Great counselors are the key!
Specialists provide the bulk of the programming and activities that campers participate in during their daily camp experience. Specialists create Jewish educational programming, recreational activities (including horseback riding and ropes course), and arts programming. Specialists offer campers the opportunity to develop new skills and talents. Such experiences are fun and important for building positive self-esteem.
